CITES Registered Breeder Applications

Demonstrating the ability to breed both purebred and hybrid specimens

requirements for obtaining CITES Registered Breeder status, in line with Resolution Conf. 12.10 (Rev. CoP15).

To fulfil the conditions of Resolution Conf. 12.10, breeders applying for registration must be able to demonstrate their ability to breed both purebred and hybrid specimens of the species they are seeking to register.

What this means in practice:

Breeders applying for registration of Gyr x Peregrine hybrid falcons, for example, must also be able to demonstrate the capability to breed purebred Peregrine and Gyr falcons. This will require the inclusion of both male and female purebred Peregrine and Gyrs in the breeding stock. The ability to breed pure specimens is a key part of demonstrating self-sufficiency and maintaining the sustainability of captive breeding programmes, as required under CITES guidance.

This clarification ensures consistency in how applications are assessed and reflects the standards outlined in Res. Conf. 12.10. We encourage all prospective applicants to review their breeding programmes in light of this requirement before submitting an application.
